Breathe and Marley!

30 Sep

Friday’s with Marley…

I arrived home on Sunday from a health and fitness awareness retreat in New Hampshire called Breathe. In one weekend I regained my sense of well-being, pushed my physical outer-limits and fed my soul with inspiration.

…Marley greeted me at the front door, jumping, wiggling and barking loudly. I could feel my well-being slipping to the ground as fast as I would on an unsalted winter sidewalk.

Marley, how are you? What’s going on? And why are you pacing like a caged animal?
I had so many questions and I feared very few sensible answers would come my way.

Trying hard to distract her I say, Marley, do you want to hear about my mind-blowing weekend? I had such a wonderful time.

Nope she barked.

I had the good sense to ignore her and started to share my amazing life changing weekend, hoping she would calm down by the time I finished…..
I started telling her about the all day hike, summit two peaks in one day, climbed treacherous rocks to wedge myself through small cavities to get through caves that were magnificent (scary) and definitely a must see in ones life. I continued on enthusiastically about an outdoors spinning class…

Marley interrupted and I knew at this point there was no distracting her, she was like a dog on a bone! Clearly she was going to ignore my happy and calming tones.

Well she begins with a loud exhale…”I was far too busy to even think about my soul much-less feed it…I mean, I only had time to feed my stomach!”

…Marley, I didn’t actually mean…Oh never mind….So tell me, what were you so busy doing????

She stops pacing, sticks her nose up in the air and says, “I was busy sending out emails to friends with information that I knew they already had”.
Yep she continues, I find that to be a great marketing strategy to keep my name in their “inbox”

I’m not understanding?

Why do you think it’s important to have your name in your friends’ inbox…? It sounds so ridiculous and a huge waste of time to me…..There is something I’m definitely missing about this story or certainly missing key pieces!

AND…

…Having to ask, but I know will dread the answer…

…What are you marketing?
Well, she lays down and snorts…”I haven’t decided what I’m marketing as of yet, but when I do, the strategy will already be in place and then I won’t have to work… Yep, efficient and phenomenal.”

I looked at her as she snuggled downed into her cozy comforter and as she started to nod off into her dreams, I realized, there is no making sense of crazy.

I went upstairs, started to unpack, and feeling pure unfiltered joy and happiness ( remembering all the most wonderful pieces and parts of the weekend)…And I knew…
While there will always be crazy living on the outside, happiness is nurtured and sustained on the inside!

From The Blog Of Susan Ascher! “Change the Channel”

5 Nov

Susan – The timing of your post was a sign from God to me…I am definitely changing the channel…Thanks for the inspiration that I not only can but should change the channel!

Don’t Like the Program? Change the Channel.

I don’t watch a lot of television. I prefer reading. But in those rare moments when I DO take a moment to turn on the TV, one thing is for certain. If I don’t like what I am watching, I change the channel. No point in complaining about something that doesn’t interest me. No point in wasting time. No point in watching something that doesn’t make me laugh or teach me something new.

Why can’t we do the same thing when it comes to disrespectful clients, toxic relationships or unfulfilling careers?

Years ago I had a client named Cindy. She had come in to my client’s HR department like a hurricane, firing staff and suppliers in her wake. Fortunately for me, the Executive VP of Finance loved our company, so Cindy couldn’t get rid of me so fast. What neither party knew, was that I had never had a client like her. EVER. After three episodes of her outrageous outbursts, screaming at me and my team and falsifying information, I fired HER. I placed a call to the EVP, explained the situation and told him, very nicely, that we could not continue our relationship as it stood. I didn’t expect the company to fire her. I also knew (know) that time is money. It was clear that she didn’t want to work with us. Instead of hitting our heads against the wall, we simply changed the channel. We stopped calling her and moved on to new clients who wanted to engage us.

I have had similar situations with toxic “friends”. The kind of “friends” who expect an invitation to a party or event you are hosting and then never reciprocate. The kind who talk about you behind your back (and everyone else’s BTW). The kind who contingency plan, confirming a date and then conveniently canceling because something better has come up or they “forgot”. Luckily, I haven’t had too many of these toxic “friends”. But when I find out who they are, I change the channel. Life is short and time is precious.

About five years ago, I was no longer passionate about vetting candidates through the big black hole of the internet. The up close and personal relationships I had forged took a back seat to RFP’s, PEO’s and other assorted acronyms. I get that. Business models change. I just wasn’t passionate about operating in that model any longer. When the game changed and I no longer loved what I was doing, I did what I always do. I changed the channel. Hundreds of teams and executives later, I am happily following my passion again. This time around as a communication strategist, author and public speaker.

Is it time to change the channel? What situation have you been in where you had to change the channel? I’d love to know. Feel free to email me at susan@susanascher.com.

Truth and Peace!

3 Nov

I rode my bike to church this morning and as I was peddling my way back to my new home, I decided to change direction and stop off at Thing One and Thing Two’s home.

As you might or might not know Thing One and Thing Two started off as my neighbors,  and at some point, don’t know when, they turned into family!

And just a few months ago, all I had to do was walk through a row of bushes to to be with them.  But since my move, I now have to purposely stop at their home for an order of hugs with a side of joy, love and laughter!

But, with all that said, I am off track…What this post is about, TRUTH AND PEACE.

…This morning’s sermon was about Peace as a double edge sword. The Priest explained as christians we must always follow a life of truth, regardless if peace is lost in the process, including in your family and/or with your friends…

As I was explaining this to Thing One’s and Thing Two’s mother…

…The a-ha moment arrived…The shift in awareness became apparent…I realized when a belief  is based in love and kindness along with the belief that the truth will set you free…One realizes

…There is peace in the truth!

But, if you had to pick just one, which would you pick?

Peace?

OR…

Truth?

Finding Happiness In The Naked Truth!

15 Sep

VH1 “Dating Naked”

Have you heard or seen this show on VH1?

Have to admit, not me…Not until I was watching The Ellen DeGeneres show a few days ago. Ellen was poking fun at the most ridiculous  comments some of the contestants were saying. Ellen was very funny about it!

So of course I had to check it out…

I would like to say “curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought him back”

BUT….

…In this case…

Curiosity just plan killed this cat!

I have happiness today knowing I will never have to watch that show again!

How about you…Do you know where your happiness is coming from today?

What Do You See?

27 Aug

I recently purchased Kangoo Runners and posted this picture on my Facebook page.

IMG_0450

The comments ranged from (please see below), “you are going to kill yourself to please video!” Basically saying when you do kill yourself, I want to laugh my ass off!

“Just fill out the hospital admission form ahead of time.”

You’re going to kill yourself, Are you serious?

“I’m not sure…those look dangerous!”

“please video tape this” – My very funny sister and a very funny friend of my daughter’s left this comment

And…

…After I stopped laughing, it hit me like a two by four across the face….As these moments always do.

Pure and good  admission of honesty right here folks…

…I have to admit, I NEVER once saw the Kangoo Runners as dangerous, thought NEVER popped into my head…Just a whole lot of FUN!

Is there something wrong with me?

OR???

Is there something right with me?

“May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.” – Nelson Mandela

So far I have been correct. I have had a blast running in them! A great joyful workout completely void of fear!

What do you see?

Danger or fun…As always, it’s your decision!
