From The Blog Of Susan Ascher! “Change the Channel”

5 Nov

Susan – The timing of your post was a sign from God to me…I am definitely changing the channel…Thanks for the inspiration that I not only can but should change the channel!

Don’t Like the Program? Change the Channel.

I don’t watch a lot of television. I prefer reading. But in those rare moments when I DO take a moment to turn on the TV, one thing is for certain. If I don’t like what I am watching, I change the channel. No point in complaining about something that doesn’t interest me. No point in wasting time. No point in watching something that doesn’t make me laugh or teach me something new.

Why can’t we do the same thing when it comes to disrespectful clients, toxic relationships or unfulfilling careers?

Years ago I had a client named Cindy. She had come in to my client’s HR department like a hurricane, firing staff and suppliers in her wake. Fortunately for me, the Executive VP of Finance loved our company, so Cindy couldn’t get rid of me so fast. What neither party knew, was that I had never had a client like her. EVER. After three episodes of her outrageous outbursts, screaming at me and my team and falsifying information, I fired HER. I placed a call to the EVP, explained the situation and told him, very nicely, that we could not continue our relationship as it stood. I didn’t expect the company to fire her. I also knew (know) that time is money. It was clear that she didn’t want to work with us. Instead of hitting our heads against the wall, we simply changed the channel. We stopped calling her and moved on to new clients who wanted to engage us.

I have had similar situations with toxic “friends”. The kind of “friends” who expect an invitation to a party or event you are hosting and then never reciprocate. The kind who talk about you behind your back (and everyone else’s BTW). The kind who contingency plan, confirming a date and then conveniently canceling because something better has come up or they “forgot”. Luckily, I haven’t had too many of these toxic “friends”. But when I find out who they are, I change the channel. Life is short and time is precious.

About five years ago, I was no longer passionate about vetting candidates through the big black hole of the internet. The up close and personal relationships I had forged took a back seat to RFP’s, PEO’s and other assorted acronyms. I get that. Business models change. I just wasn’t passionate about operating in that model any longer. When the game changed and I no longer loved what I was doing, I did what I always do. I changed the channel. Hundreds of teams and executives later, I am happily following my passion again. This time around as a communication strategist, author and public speaker.

Is it time to change the channel? What situation have you been in where you had to change the channel? I’d love to know. Feel free to email me at susan@susanascher.com.

Loving Words On Thursday!

4 Sep

“It happens all the time in heaven,

And some day

It will begin to happen

Again on earth-

That men and women who are

And men and men who are lovers,

And women and women

Who give each other light,

Often will get down on their

And while so tenderly

Holding their lover’s hand,

With tears in their eyes,

Will sincerely speak, saying,

My dear,

How can I be more loving to you;

How can I be more kind?”

What Do You See?

I recently purchased Kangoo Runners and posted this picture on my Facebook page.

The comments ranged from (please see below), “you are going to kill yourself to please video!” Basically saying when you do kill yourself, I want to laugh my ass off!

“Just fill out the hospital admission form ahead of time.”

You’re going to kill yourself, Are you serious?

“I’m not sure…those look dangerous!”

“please video tape this” – My very funny sister and a very funny friend of my daughter’s left this comment

…After I stopped laughing, it hit me like a two by four across the face….As these moments always do.

Pure and good  admission of honesty right here folks…

…I have to admit, I NEVER once saw the Kangoo Runners as dangerous, thought NEVER popped into my head…Just a whole lot of FUN!

Is there something wrong with me?

Is there something right with me?

“May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.” – Nelson Mandela

So far I have been correct. I have had a blast running in them! A great joyful workout completely void of fear!

What do you see?

Danger or fun…As always, it’s your decision!

Today…Staying aware of beginnings!

25 Jun

My son celebrated his birthday last weekend which brings to an end our birthday season….And it got me thinking.

In the past..I never understood why some adults made such a big deal out of birthdays, their own, and even to people they barely knew. It’s not like that birthday person did anything especially heroic to be born (wasn’t even their choice) or has solved any of the world’s big problems (cure for cancer, world peace)

And then, (as always), my thoughts started to wander about the whole cosmic birthday thing…

I thought…Why do some people love their birthdays and others would rather take that day off the calendar?

Are birthdays all about age? Are we just checking off one more year from the living calendar?

Are birthdays the annual (anniversary) reminder of happy and/or sad yesteryears?

Maybe for some, birthdays are filled with unattainable expectations of birthday grangers? Trying to fill a bottomless childhood emotion?

…Is it something different?

…Is it supposed  to be something different?

As I get older I hear my sweet, brilliant and beautiful mother’s words play over in my head, she would say, “There is more to old age than gray hair and wrinkles.”

Once again this post provides me yet another opportunity to say, Mom I love you and you are correct, as always XXOO!

…As I run, jump and skip through life’s birthdays, I’ve discovered, birthdays are not a time to take stock in life’s happy milestones or sad failures (that’s for the day after) but  a time to celebrate relationships (we are all connected). And age (birthdays) gives us the opportunity to know this!

I’ve discovered…

…It’s not about being center of attention or about the gifts!…Though I do L O V E the Godiva Chocolates my sister gives me every year :)!

BUT instead,

Birthdays are an opportunity to connect and reconnect with family, friends and yes even with strangers…It’s a day of opportunities, to go out of your way to pepper even more kindness into the world, to bring people together and to celebrate love, friendships and hopeful new beginnings, regardless of age!

God gives us a gift every year, it’s called a birthday…

…Humbly and filled with gratitude, I thank you God, for gracing my son and daughters this year with your generous and precious gift of another birthday!

Cold and Homeless!

31 Jan

About two weeks ago I sat in my car in front of a lovely restaurant in town waiting for my “take-out” dinner.

Just a second I need to back-up even further…

My husband was out of town and I decided I wanted an early dinner from this lovely restaurant that I enjoy going to. I took it even a step further, (lazier) and thought if there wasn’t a parking place available right in front of the restaurant I will keep driving because I do not even feel like walking a little for my dinner tonight…Far too cold and windy!

Well, lord and behold a fine parking space right in front of my restaurant. Yippee, I thought, God is taking such good care of me, far too cold to be out and about!

I called in my order from my cell phone, still not needing to brave the elements as my ass sat in my warm car (music playing). I was told it would be about 15 minutes. I sang “no problem.”

I played words with friends, talked with friends and then decided to look at all my amazing stocks on an app I downloaded several weeks before. I was adding up all the plus columns, thinking such happy thoughts, quite proud of myself for buying more shares of twitter before it hit 50… When a homeless man knocks on my window. I froze, trust me not because of the cold.

I hear “I’m not going to rob you, I just need a little money for a hot meal and to get to the men’s homeless shelter for tonight”. His lips and face were about three if not four different shades of color ranging from light to dark. He didn’t have gloves or a hat and his coat was certainly nothing I would have considered warm enough for such a winter night. I lowered my window a little and he continued, “I’m not going to buy drugs, I just need a hot meal and to get to the men’s shelter for a bed tonight”.

I grabbed my purse, pulled out my wallet and handed him $20…By his reaction you would have thought I just gave him the keys to heaven.

…Then it occurred to me, God wasn’t taking care of me on that cold night, he was taking care of the homeless man…

Do I know for sure drugs were not bought that night, no! But I do know everyone comes into our life for a reason and God works in very mysterious ways!

Monday’s Thoughts!

24 Jun

Just my thoughts for today….

Be safe!

The Day Before Thanksgiving!

21 Nov
Dear Readers,

I’ve heard it, I have read it and I have said it myself so many times…
Thanksgiving is such a wonderful holiday because it is just about being together, NO GIFTS! It is a day set aside for gratitude…for the friends in your life (family that you get to choose), for family (the ones you do not get to choose) but are so very grateful and thankful. AND yes Thanksgiving is also a beautiful time to give thanks for the struggles, which are nothing more then beautiful blessings in disguise! Riddles and clues proof of God’s love and presents in your life!
With all this said…
I feel there seems to be an important message we all seem to ignore at Christmas and throughout the year! Of course I am not trying to start a no gift giving policy at the holiday time. I think the “Retail World” would take out a hit on me, but what I am trying to start is a little more of a Thanksgiving thought/feel (just being together, void of materialist expectations) with loads and loads of servings of appreciation and love throughout the frantic Christmas holidays!
Change happens one person at a time and it can start with me!…Is there another brave soul?
Wishing you all a very HAPPY and Safe THANKSGIVING!
Asklotta and staff will MIND YOUR BUSINESS today making a loving and positive change in my life one thought at a time!
Again, it has been my pleasure to tell you what to do and what NOT to do!
Kindest regards,

This Really Will Be Short and To The Point and completely filled with much gratitude!

23 Aug
Dear Readers,
I received these exact words from Sam’s family last night…
“Well, your wonderful, loving, caring, generous plea for prayers for Sam is working.  He’s better!  THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart! You have no idea how helpless I felt and the outpour of kindness was truly amazing. It would have melted even a stone cold heart of hearts and turned a nonbeliever in to a believer, I do believe! Another meaningful coincidence!
“I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind.
Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But
I’ve brought a big bat. I’m all ready you see. Now my
troubles are going to have troubles with me!”
-Dr. Seuss
My pleas for prayers (August 21 posting) were answered because of you, because YOU “brought a big bat” to Sam’s troubles (to his families), You brought them hope! You brought me hope! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You have proven, you have shown, there are more of YOU then there are of them!
Asklotta and staff will be MINDING YOUR BUSINESS today filled with gratitude and love for all of YOU!!!
AND in complete awe of the power of prayers, positive thoughts and positive energy!
Again, it has been my pleasure to tell you what to do and what NOT to do!
Kindest regards,
President and CEO
