Carol’s Corner and Ben Stein!

5 Dec
Dear Readers,

Again, the following is from my dear friend Carol. Lets call this one “From Carol’s Corner.”

The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on a CBS Sunday Morning  Commentary.

My confession:

I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish.  And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees, Christmas trees…  I don’t feel threatened..  I don’t feel discriminated against.. That’s what they are, Christmas trees.

It doesn’t bother me a bit when people say, ‘Merry Christmas’ to me.  I don’t think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto.  In fact, I kind of like it.  It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn’t bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu .  If people want a crèche, it’s just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.

I don’t like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don’t think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians.  I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period.  I have no idea where the concept came from, that America is an explicitly atheist country.  I can’t find it in the Constitution and I don’t like it being shoved down my throat…

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren’t allowed to worship God as we understand Him?  I guess that’s a sign that I’m getting old, too.  But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different:  This is not intended to be a joke; it’s not funny, it’s intended to get you thinking.

In light of recent events… terrorists attack, school shootings, etc..  I think it started when Madeleine Murray O’Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn’t want prayer in our schools, and we said OK.  Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school…  The Bible says thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself.  And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn’t spank our children when they misbehave, because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock’s son committed suicide).  We said an expert should know what he’s talking about..  And we said okay..

Now we’re asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don’t know right from wrong, and why it doesn’t bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out.  I think it has a great deal to do with ‘WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.’

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world’s going to hell.  Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says.  Funny how you can send ‘jokes’ through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.  Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.

Are you laughing yet?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you’re not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it.

Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.

Pass it on if you think it has merit.

If not, then just discard it… no one will know you did.  But, if you discard this thought process, don’t sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.

My Best Regards,  Honestly and respectfully,

Ben Stein

Pre-Gaming To The Holidays!

4 Dec
Dear Readers,

My friend Carmen said to me the other day…a few days after 18 family members were at her home for Thanksgiving, “I wish I could fall asleep and wake up in the New Year!” I know exactly how she feels. This time of the year I feel like I am standing at the base of a steep mountain with only days  to get to the summit (December 25).

You see this climb is not without bad weather (literally and emotionally), exhaustion (literally and emotionally), and a trail soaked in tradition (literally and emotionally).

I am a very strong 5 feet 1 inch girl loaded with love, energy and determination with never failing amount of cheer! And what I’ve come to understand about this season, this holiday, this time of year, it is not about waging a personal war/vendetta against Madison Ave or with big and small retail stores for their assault on my peace and harmony…But I have come to realize and understand, this season, this holiday, this time of year is a huge opportunity to feel God’s presents (literally and emotionally). To remind myself that God gave us an unbelievable beautiful present on December 25, his Son, our savior!

So with all that said…

My gift to you is a quote from 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace by Dr. Wayne Dyer

“I’ve come to know the peace of Spirit in my life, and because of this knowing, all of my concerns, problems, accomplishments, and accumulations diminish in importance.”

Asklotta and staff will MIND YOUR BUSINESS today in loving peace!

Again, it has been my pleasure to tell you what to do and what NOT to do!

The Day Before Thanksgiving!

21 Nov
Dear Readers,

I’ve heard it, I have read it and I have said it myself so many times…

Thanksgiving is such a wonderful holiday because it is just about being together, NO GIFTS! It is a day set aside for gratitude…for the friends in your life (family that you get to choose), for family (the ones you do not get to choose) but are so very grateful and thankful. AND yes Thanksgiving is also a beautiful time to give thanks for the struggles, which are nothing more then beautiful blessings in disguise! Riddles and clues proof of God’s love and presents in your life!

With all this said…

I feel there seems to be an important message we all seem to ignore at Christmas and throughout the year! Of course I am not trying to start a no gift giving policy at the holiday time. I think the “Retail World” would take out a hit on me, but what I am trying to start is a little more of a Thanksgiving thought/feel (just being together, void of materialist expectations) with loads and loads of servings of appreciation and love throughout the frantic Christmas holidays!

Change happens one person at a time and it can start with me!…Is there another brave soul?

Wishing you all a very HAPPY and Safe THANKSGIVING!

Asklotta and staff will MIND YOUR BUSINESS today making a loving and positive change in my life one thought at a time!

Again, it has been my pleasure to tell you what to do and what NOT to do!

The Holidays!

19 Nov
Dear Readers,

Though the holidays for many are filled with much love and laughter…but sadly for others, quite the opposite.  The holidays seem to pull scabs off of old emotional wounds… whether by death, illness, divorce, loneliness, financial or due to really bad decisions. This all adds up to personal grief that becomes even more blown up and grows way out of proportion. It becomes oh so difficult to manage at a time when we think we need to create the “Hallmark” image.

Even though it seems to be the Christmas holiday as the deal breaker for emotional health, I find for many it begins at Thanksgiving and we all should slow down and release the control we think we have but truly never did. A loud rendishen of the Beatles song “Let It Be” would be perfect right about now!

I find for many people Thanksgiving is the pre-gaming to the Bigger, Better, More frantic (hot mess) holiday!

Already exhausted from the Thanksgiving cooking, the drunk comment made by Aunt whoever about whatever!… And then before the break of daylight  “Black Friday” up early to the stores, waiting in long lines, getting pushed, shoved, to make the deal that the retail Gods have led you to believe you can-NOT possibly afford to miss! Or possibly this year all that excitement will come at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving! If I am even still awake at 8 p.m. I will surely be in my p.j. trying to figure out how and why I ate so much!!!

Why, why, WHY I ask you do we do it?  For two reason,
1) To create the Christmas magic for the ones you love.
2) We feel we are going to miss out

AHHHH! We all have been drinking the retail kool-aide far too long!

…AND with all that said

Celebrate the Moment

Despite our good intentions, remember that the holidays rarely turn out as planned. Focus on making them a special time for you and your family, no matter what the circumstances. Celebrate this season of hope and expectation. Celebrate the many blessings in your life.

Rev. Susan Gregg-Schroeder Coordinator of Mental Health Ministries

A great on-line article about emotionally managing the holidays with a wonderful six step action plan, please go to…

1) Know Your Limits
2) Don’t over schedule
3) Skip the holiday Toasts
4) Ask for help with holiday errands
5) Don’t forget your meds
6) Don’t ignore the warning signs

This year I plan to work really hard at finding my calm, grace and peace and relax my way into this years Christmas season. I am going to create the magic for the ones I love by being responsible for my actions and my actions ONLY. I am going to stay away from toxic people who only have greed, jealousy and hate in their hearts. I am going to attend church more often to be reminded that the birth of our savior is why we even celebrate Christmas.

Business Trip, Delta Airlines and Much Laughter!

15 Nov
Dear Readers,

Last Monday 3:22 a.m. RING ring, RING, ring, RING, ring! My cell phone and my silent investor’s cell phone is ringing, buzzing SCREAMING waking us from a sound sleep…I throw back the covers and leap out of bed in a single bound, sprint to my phone in a second and a half and have promise God everything and anything as long as all my children are safe!

…Delta Airlines recording my/our 6:15 a.m. flight has been canceled.

and now have been confirmed on a 11:00 a.m. flight and my husband has been confirmed on a completely different flight leaving Cleveland 6:45 a.m. we once were traveling together but leave it to the airlines to change that plan, now arriving in OK City five hours apart.

After I am able to start breathing again from the jarring fright and start to process the change in our travel plans my silent investor calls Delta to get us on the same flight, feeling badly of course not wanting to upsetting Delta’s agenda or inconvenience Delta Airlines!

The call to Delta’s reservation desk with a wait time of 20 minutes (I guess we were not the only ones disrupting Delta) while music played while flat on my back with my arm over my eyes. I must confess I was not thinking sweet thoughts about Delta! But I did benefit by allowing me time to gather my thoughts and think about the best way to proceed with exactly what is needed. After a chat with someone trying to be helpful my silent investor has booked us on the same flight out of Cleveland! I do hope Delta doesn’t hold a grudge….

But this is the kind of stuff to anyone who has been reading my blog will know this does not bother me in the least. In fact I see it as God intervening for my own good for there is something HE wants me to do or something I need to avoided…If nothing else sure gives me something to laugh about!

And if flight delays, flight cancellations, rerouting is not your calm/laughter and it blows your skirt/pants up in to a wad…then may I suggest avoiding the whole airline industry completely because no matter how angry you get or entitled you feel….will not do one bit of good and I guarantee it will only make your life even worse, I promise you that!

Asklotta and staff will MIND YOUR BUSINESS today with my fingers and toes crossed for a safe day of travels but always in acceptance of God’s will.

Again, it has been my pleasure to tell you what to do and what NOT to do!

External Situations!

9 Nov
Dear Readers,

Below is a comment I made to a blog called To Be Aware and he responded to my comment. The posting was all about finding the root or source of your unhappiness. And pretty much it all comes down to fear and not taking responsibility

but with that said…My comment basically expressed…great on a simplistic level like weather, delayed planes, a dry cleaning mishap, Halloween, parking ticket, where there is a beginning, middle and end. But what if it goes to a higher level, a higher level of caring, a higher level of continuation that hasn’t ended.

His response…

“You prevent joy/happiness/moving on for yourself. Nothing external to you can rule your experience of life. It is your choice how to react to changing external situations. No one chooses your attitude besides you.”

I agree with him but my brain did not stop clicking…

…It is time to play the What if game…

What if…

A Bully, someone/s activity working to hurt you daily (posting October 24, the reader who commented she was bullied in high school and as much as she tried to ignore it, it was impossible to avoid the humiliation and pain.

A very ill child, A parent’s constant worry, for the cure is beyond their ability

A terminally ill parent suffering in pain and you are rendered helpless to ease their pain

Molestation/rape

Imprisoned for a crime you did not comment

And for this is when I say due to the emotions God gave humans (love, empathy, care) I believe external situations can prevent joy/happiness/moving on!

For I believe to have “joy/happiness/moving on” while in the mist of severe and cruel outside forces is to NOT CARE! You simply do not care.  This is the perfect time to quote my brilliant and beauty Mother “The boil on the other man’s ass never hurts.” Well done Mom! or to quote my youngest step-son “solid.”

AND maybe just maybe lacking “joy/happiness/moving on” in our life during certain life altering events and to feel life’s pain (as uncomfortable as it is) is exactly where we need to be in that moment and time. Maybe there is something we are needing to feel, to live (to teach us) to deliver us emotionally and physically where we need to be in the end.

My last two cents worth…If “nothing external to you can rule your experience of life” what would be the point to living life and embracing life’s experiences, the good, the bad and the ugly. For if nothing more life is a collections of adventures or stories as my friend Linda calls them. God would not have given us the ability to love, care, have empathy and to learn if no one else mattered but the me’s! I have to believe God did not give us any un-useful spare parts.

TGIF- Comedian Steven Crowder – It Is Time To Laugh!

2 Nov
Dear Readers,

Seven full days of constant rain of biblical proportions. Yesterday I built a boat per the instructions of God to save myself and my family. Animals got on board simply and easily by marching two by two AND when it came to saving my family… the endless arguments, discussions, schedule conflicts and excuses! No one wanted to believe me the world was coming to an end, you know teenagers. Nothing was simple, nothing was easy…no one wanted to RSVP without confirmation the boat I built to save their lives wouldn’t interfere with their plans.

They started to negotiate, wanting to bring their computers, iphones, ipads, ipod, itunes, Chipotle burritos, Dorritos – Cool Ranch flavor, was the boat wireless they asked? I kept insisting this is NOT how the story was suppose to go…no one was listening to me! So I started to scream… YOU IDIOTS God and I are trying to save your life but you know teenagers…

…God said (and I listened) save yourself and stop screaming you are giving me a headache of biblical proportions. God said there isn’t enough space on the boat for the Apple store…I said…but God how did you not plan/know for the fourth fiscal quarter of 2011 Apple posted revenue of $28.27 billion and net quarterly profit of 6.62 billion and God you know teenagers? Now I was starting to question this  antiquated boat, I wasn’t prepared for dial-up!

I wavered but did not break, I stood firm in my faith, never losing faith in God’s Will no matter what Apple posted for 2011 revenue. So I left on that seventh day of darkness and dankness of 40 degree Fahrenheit (for all my e-Canadian friends that would be 4.4 Celsius) and of course sailing off per God’s wishes…saving myself!

Pause…pause…I’m hitting the pause button on this ridiculous rain drenched story for the sun has finally come out! I received calls from five of my friends to ensure I saw the sun at 6:02 pm…giggling and giddy… I said, I did, I did…Hallelujah, Joy to the World!

For it is now time for singing, dancing and laughing on this wonderful Friday!

Laughing is my contribution to that lovely trio….will need a little help from my e-pals for the singing and dancing portion.

But for NOW (see below) cut and paste because this is too damn funny…My oldest child sent this to me while I was on my boat, thank goodness she didn’t give up her Apple products! Love you sweetheart you saved my post!

“Comedian Steven Crowder ‘Redistributes’ Children’s Halloween Candy in Political Spoof Video”

“In the redistribution of sugar wealth video, one child who had some candy taken away had this to say:

“Hey, dude that’s not cool. It’s not fun to take people’s candy. That’s my candy, I worked hard for it.”

When Steven Crowder pointed out that he had more than the child standing next to him, the angry youngster informed the comedian that it was “ok” to have more than someone else. The responses from other children who had some of their Halloween candy redistributed did not go along with the “fair share” endeavor quietly either.

One unhappy child even threatened to call the police because Crowder took something that did not belong to him. Steven explained that he was not stealing, just simply redistributing from those who have a lot to those who have less. The political theory did not impress the kiddos who simply wanted to keep what they had spent an hour earning.”

Asklotta and staff will MIND YOUR BUSINESS today laughing with friends outside in the sun!

Again, it has been my pleasure to tell you what to do and what NOT to do!

Mindful Timely Comments!

1 Nov
Dear Readers,

Since Halloween as been postponed until Sunday in my town due to hurricane Sandy… My lip snarled like “Snidely Whiplash” Ha! Now with a four day extension I’ve got more time to plot, more time to snarl at this orange and black holiday.  I must confess I started to think of ideas for this year’s Halloween costume with a ” six days of rain attitude” (as if you couldn’t tell) and came up with… H U R R I C A N E
S A N D Y. YES you heard it here first, I am going as hurricane Sandy! That will be my costume!!!

Why not? How appropriate I thought. I would answer the door with a fan blowing on high behind me and a bucket of rain water that I would throw drenching trick-or-treaters with wind and water or at least the rain water would end up on the teenagers who show up at my door in sweatshirts and do nothing but mumble and hold out their hands….AND THEN…AND THEN…and then,  I read a comment from a reader….

…commenting on my post (10.31.12) “We Can, We Do…but Should We?”

Dear Lotta –
Your blog today takes me to one of my favorite books, “The Hiding Place,” by Corrie Ten Boom, a true account of life in a concentration camp (interesting how your topic keeps taking me back to the holocaust). Corrie was there with her sister, Betsy. Betsy, a living ray of hope, faith and forgiveness, tells Corrie that she needs to be thankful for everything in her life — even as she lay on her hay platform bed that was infested with fleas. Huh? How could she possibly be thankful for these horrible, painful, fleas and flea bites? But Corrie gave in and thanked God for the fleas.
Later it was found that the reason the guards didn’t enter Corrie and Betsy’s barracks to beat and torture this particular group of women was because of the fleas.
Need I say more?

Thank you for reminding me of all the appreciation I should be giving daily for there is always something and everything to be thankful for even after six days of constant rain. I truly needed your comment/reminder today of all days (God works in mysterious ways) to be thankful for everything in my life. It has now been six long days of non-stop rain in Cleveland with no hope of clouds clearing with a cease and desist any time soon today.

This all started last Friday when we got slammed by a storm charging from the West, without a pause button to push, by mid-day Monday the storm charging from the East (Sandy) slammed right up against us!  It has been relentless and I am quite desperate for some sunshine!  I feel as if I’m turning into a mushroom!!!

Let me say it again, God works in mysterious ways! Your mindful timely comment with meaningful thoughts delivered me (back) to my sense of humor (without a bucket of rain water to throw) but yet instead filled with gratitude …I am grateful for MY problems, wouldn’t trade them for the world! My husband and ALL my children are safe…”Need I say more?”

Asklotta and staff will MIND YOUR BUSINESS today tossing my hurricane sandy costume idea and instead remaining in rain boots and a rain slicker drenched in full appreciation!

Again, it has been my pleasure to tell you what to do and what NOT to do!

Bullying 3

25 Oct
Dear Readers,

A powerful response from a reader regarding yesterday’s posting “Bullying 2” became my inspiration for today!

Please read!

Dear Lotta –
You struck a chord in me today by the mere mention of Anne Frank. You made me think of the morning I was in Amsterdam several years ago. Someone had told us (my husband and me) about the Anne Frank House, which wasn’t far from our hotel. The next morning we happened to wake up earlier than usual and decided that, only because we had some extra time, we would venture over there to see what it was all about.

It had to have been God working in our lives that morning because we were the first ones in the house and we had it almost completely to ourselves. As we walked up the secret staircase hidden behind the bookcase in the wall, I was overcome with emotion. It was so real, she had been here, and I felt that little girl. I saw the dismal office where she took her life-sustaining baths. I saw her tiny little cramped bed adorned by photos of movie stars on the wall. I saw where this amazing little girl ate, wrote, listened, loved, and played, all the while a victim of one of the cruelest forms of bullying the world has ever known.

But above all, I saw THE DIARY. The sight of it brought me to tears. Oh, the wisdom, the light, the awareness, and the lessons that come from those pages! If only every young person today had the opportunity to read it! I fear, as we slowly lose our living connections to WWII and the holocaust, that our young people will never have the opportunity to comprehend the life-changing consequences of true cruelty. Amazingly, in the long run, Anne Frank rose above it all.

Amazingly, the words of young Anne Frank said it all…

Quote from The Diary of Anne Frank:
“I understand more and more how true Daddy’s words were when he said: ‘All children must look after their own upbringing.’ Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.”
Yes, but it’s interesting to me that much of Anne Frank’s wisdom came directly from her father’s mouth.
Enough said.

Thank you, thank you , thank you so much for taking the time to respond/to share such a powerful memory! I do believe God was working in your life as he is today for me!

I say, I yell, I scream…ENOUGH is ENOUGH…UniteStand UpBe Counted

Together we can put an end to this epidemic called Bullying!

Asklotta and staff will MIND YOUR BUSINESS today remaining hopeful kind actions will be contagious!

Again, it has been my pleasure to tell you what to do and what NOT to do!
