Monday’s Bad News…You’re Crazy!

22 Jul

Hi all,

It’s been another blissful week since I’ve covered you in a blanket of MY opinions! So get ready you might feel a bit suffocated between me and the American Psychiatric Association. But as I just found out, there is now a diagnosis and prescription ready if my posting makes you feel less than happy.

Allow me to explain, there is now a diagnosis called “Unspecified Disorders”….You or your children do not need to have any symptoms to get a great “twofer” from the American Psychiatric Association…. Diagnosed & prescription!

Just in case you missed this great article by Leonard Sax in the Wall Street Journal on Thursday, June 27, 2013….Please keep reading!

“Unspecified Mental Disorder? That’s Crazy” – By Leonard Sax

“The American Psychiatric Association released a revision of its diagnostic bible in May,… ‘The fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,” or DSM-5 is the official guidebook for diagnosing every conceivable psychiatric aliment. This new edition loosens the rules in a disturbing way.”

“In previous editions, you the patient had to meet certain specified criteria in order to be diagnosed for any particular condition.”

“…Last month, DSM-5 introduced a new diagnosis, ‘Unspecified Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder.” The only required criterion is that you have some distress from unspecified symptoms, but you do not meet the full criteria for any of the disorders in the schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders diagnostic class. You don’t have to have delusions. You don’t have to have hallucinations.” “Likewise for every other diagnostic category, including, for example, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Let’s suppose that you occasionally don’t pay attention to your wife. You don’t meet the old-fashioned criteria for ADHD, which included impairment in multiple settings, like on the job or while driving. You are inattentive only when your wife is talking. You pay attention to everybody else. Hey, no problem. You now qualify for Unspecified Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.”…”In other words, everybody’s a little bit crazy…”

“But what if your symptoms are too vague even to nudge the compass, however sluggishly, in any direction, toward any particular diagnosis whatsoever? What if you’re feeling down because you’re not ‘living your best life,’ to borrow Oprah’s phrase, and you want your doctor to fix the problem? No worries.”

“Over the past two decades, American culture has made almost any deviation from a continual smiley face into a psychopathology, especially for children. As recently as 1994, it was rare for any child or adolescent in the US under 20 years of age to be diagnosed as bipolar. But by 2003, it was much more common. There was a 40-fold increase in the diagnosis of bipolar disorder among American children and teenagers just between 1994 and 2003, even though the official diagnostic criteria for bipolar disorder did not change one iota during that interval. Most of the new diagnoses were for children under 15 years of age.”

“…During roughly the same time period…it was exploding for children in the U.S. the proportion of children under 15 diagnosed with bipolar disorder in Germany decreased,” ….”In the UK and in continental Europe, bipolar disorder is still recognized as a condition that cannot be reliably diagnosed in childhood. Kids have mood swings…..Moods swings are a normal part of being an 8-year-old. Unless you happen to live in the U.S., in which case your child is more likely than ever to be put on powerful antipsychotic medications.”

What are your thoughts on this?

My opinion you asked? Of course you’ll get it, this is my blog.

Over time we have created a society that thinks and feels success, happiness, love, joy, pride, peace, respect and a high self-esteem is something one is entitled to instead of earned through hard-work, high morals and kindness.  Our society has never been more detached and disconnected (forgetting we are all connected to each other) while at the same time has never been more over-crowded. Instead of embracing failure (especially in our children) and learning, doctors now prescribe medication!

I guess at the end of the day what I’ve learned…Maybe buying stock in drug manufacturers might deliver me success, happiness, love, joy, pride, and much peace!…AND OF COURSE a high self-esteem!

With all that said…

Stay safe!

You make some excellent points here, very thought provoking, i would question the data between 1994 and 2003 though. Sure, it’s gone up drastically, but so has the quality of psychiatric care and medicine. There have been many advances in diagnosis and training of psychiatrists, but I agree many children are getting medicated too soon.

I agree! Plus there are many people who are in need and benefit with the medical advances we now have in diagnosing and in medications that are now available which I’m thrilled about. I just think our schools have changed to the point that when children act like children….it is now viewed as a medicated problem solving.

well heck, the psychology community didnt need to waste all that time and money on tests, if someone had just asked me i could have told them without a shadow of a doubt that absolutely everybody is just a little bit nuts. however, that said, the american drug companies are out of control.

You are correct on all points!

Under the new medical records laws, any expression of angst over any idea, act, thought can land you with a mental health diagnosis permanently in your electronic medical record, available to any medical person, through the Obamacare database, as well as the intern at the Internal Revenue Service, which is now managing all Obamacare records. Whatever happened to privacy?

Privacy went away when entitlement moved in!
